How Do I Get Started On My Blue and Black Marble Epoxy Project?

Below you will find a checklist of the things you will need to complete your marble epoxy countertop project. Moving through the steps will be more fluid if you’re prepared up front.

  • Stone Coat Countertop Epoxy Kit
  • Black Glitter
  • Silvery Glitter
  • ⅛” Notch Trowel
  • Sand Paper
  • Chop Brush
  • Mixing Bucket
  • Gloves
  • Paper Towel
  • Drill, Mixing Paddle

Step One: Now that you’ve collected the necessary items to complete your blue and black melded marble epoxy project, you’re ready to begin. Start by applying two coats of paint that already has primer in it to your counter. Sand between each coat with 220 grit sandpaper and let the paint dry completely.

Step Two: Once your countertop is dry, wipe down the dust with a paper towel. You want to have a fresh clean surface to work with before you add the epoxy.

Step Three: Mix up the clear Stone Coat Countertop epoxy in the bucket using a drill and mixing paddle. You want to use a 1:1 ratio by volume. The general rule of thumb is 3 to 4 ounces per square foot of countertop. Mix for 2 to 3 minutes. Be sure to scrape the bottom and sides of the bucket as you mix to get a smooth mixture.

Step Four: Once you’ve mixed up the clear epoxy, you’re ready to add in the colors you’re using. Separate your clear mixture into as many containers as you need for the colors that you plan on using

Step Five: Mix in your metallic colors and base colors in their own containers. Be sure that they mix together well.

Step Six: Now that you have your mixture ready, it’s time to apply the marble epoxy to your countertop. Pour each color on the countertop in a random fashion.

Step Seven: Once you are satisfied with where you’ve poured your colors of epoxy, skip trowel your sponge across the surface in random movements. Ensure that blue and black marble epoxy is covering the entire surface of your countertop

Step Eight: Use your gloved hand or a sponge to coat the edges of your countertop. It’s best to use long horizontal strokes.

Step Nine: Torch out any air bubbles to achieve a unique marbled look. You should hold the flame close enough to the surface so it moves the colors around and lightly pops the bubbles in the epoxy resin. This is an effective way to achieve that classic marble countertop look.

Step Ten: Using a gloved finger, move marble epoxy to fill in areas that are still bare. Re-torch the surface after this step.

Step 11: Clear coat your blue and black melded marble epoxy countertop. Once you’ve waited 24 hours, it’s time to add your clear coat finish. First, you need to sand the countertop to scuff up the surface, then wipe off the dust. Mix up the clear coat mixture, pour in the center of the project and trowel it out evenly across the epoxy countertop. Once it’s evenly distributed, you’re going to chop the surface to remove any trowel lines.

This promotes adhesion and an even cure. Torch the surface to get rid of excess air bubbles and leave your countertop to dry.  Watch our clear coat video to walk through this process step-by-step.
